We have arranged for a very special visit to the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, CA, on Saturday, November 5, 2022. The museum was founded in 1957 and houses 150+ aircraft, flying (about 30) as well as non-flying. Among the rare aircraft you can find there are a North American P-51A Mustang, a Boeing P-26A Peashooter, a Lockheed P-38J Lightning, a Republic P-47G Thunderbolt, and a Vought F4U-1A Corsair. You will have access to the Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress”.
There are also a gift shop, library, and food trucks (tacos, sodas, coffee, and smoothies).
The visit will include, among other things, a guided tour (1 ½ to 2 hours), a hangar talk (starting at 10:30 AM) and a 20-min flying demo of the Grumman F8F-2 “Bearcat” (starting at 12:15 PM). As a special offer for our club members and other visitors joining us, you will be able to have a photo taken in front of one of the many aircraft. Send an email to Mike Biss (captmsb01@gmail.com) with your preferred photo op aircraft. Check the museum website for options (www.planesoffame.org/collection). The default is a P-51D Mustang. Hopefully, we can reach a consensus and the museum can accommodate our choice. No promises! We’re trying to convince the museum to select the F4U-1A Corsair in honor of Chick Linde’s Marine Corps service (hopefully, he’ll be able to attend).
The event is scheduled for November 5, 2022. You should be there for parking at 8:30 AM (the museum opens at 9:00 AM) and our event ends at 1:30 PM (the museum closes at 4:00 PM).
So please, if you can, bring your vintage car (unless it’s still on vacation in Europe or on the way back from Europe). Perhaps you have a backup vintage car or just bring a car that has all the modern conveniences, like a BJ9. It wants to have its picture taken with a vintage aircraft, too!
Do you want to meet early that Saturday morning and take a fun drive along Carbon Canyon Road (11.5 miles) to the museum? Let Mike Biss know, and he’ll send out instructions shortly before the museum visit.
