On Saturday, December 12th, several members of the club met at the Starbucks in San Juan Capistrano at 6:45 AM on a mission to deliver toys to the Marine Corps League (South Coast Detachment).

Attending were Phil Caliva (Dodge truck), Dex Kaytis (Bugeye Sprite), Chuck Lakowski (Jensen Healey), Bob Bolling (Healey 3000) and Mike Scroggie (Porsche 356). Phil drove his blue Dodge, with the bed over8lowing with toys collected during the club’s December toy drive.

With “Path Finder” Mike leading the way in his red Porsche, we headed for Ken Brown’s (USMC, retired) home nearby to drop off the toys. Well, let’s just say that my navigation skills were a bit de8icient, as we traversed through several nearby neighborhoods looking for Ken’s house. After many turnabouts, head scratching, and swearing to my followers, we 8inally found it! We unloaded the many bags of toys with Ken profusely thanking us for our support (see his Thank You letter elsewhere in this newsletter).

The next leg of our journey was to jump on the I-5 headed south to Carlsbad at attend a car show in a local shopping center parking lot.

There, the locals showed quite a bit of interest in the new (but tardy) arrivals...they ogled our cars while we munched on pastries & coffee.

One of Phil’s nieces also joined up with us there and took a photo of us witnessing the presentation of the 2020 Spirit Award by Dex to Chuck...congratulations Chuck! We then proceeded north from Carlsbad on PCH and had a nice drive through Oceanside where we rejoined I-5 headed north. The group split up when back in Orange County, with Chuck and Bob continuing towards home, while Mike, Phil and Dex exited in Laguna Niguel to visit Tom Rubinate’s “Man Cave” in an industrial garage area adjacent to I-5. There, Tom and Paige Harper were holding a “Forget the Covid Shutdown” Holiday open house with food and liquid refreshments served outside in the parking lot. About a dozen other car enthusiasts attended, besides us, in a variety of classic muscle cars and trucks. We enjoyed the late morning/early afternoon eating, drinking and telling car stories & lies. Thanks Tom & Paige for your hospitality!
