San Juan Capistrano Rotary Classic Car Show 2/07

Under warm, clear skies, 240+ vintage cars gathered at the Rotary Club International 22nd annual San Juan Capistrano Classic Car show. Which coincides with the town’s 250-year heritage anniversary celebrations. The Austin Healey Association of Southern California was well represented represented with fine examples of the marque, including all models as shown by George McHarris, Steve Heck, John Hummer and Alice Johnson, Larry Netherton, Rich Heimann, Richard Ames, Bob Clark, Chris Savage, Monica Lago- Kaytis and Clay Kaytis, Greg Aden (MKI Bugeye Sprite), Nancy Asahina in Steve Schryver’s MGB.

Orange County friends of the club Dave Eckhart (Chevy Suburban) and Mark Aldrich (Metropolitan Nash) were on hand. Members Phil Caliva and wife Nancy Wolf, also turned out in their awesome 1956 classic Ford F-100 pickup.

Active-duty US Marines from Camp Pendelton were also in attendance displaying their heavy transport and what looked like a Q53 Radar System in tow.

Generally reserved for horses, this beautifully located multi-acre riding park venue showcased a mix of vintage, classic and creative conveyances (think rat rods) and their equally eclectic owners on the lawn where live music, well drinks, beer and food were plentiful.

Back to the Austin Healey club circle, we all talked about the latest foibles and repairs – both human and vehicle related – with interest and care. Fur baby Murphy, the Ames’ very friendly goldie, grabbed our affection and almost my lunch! And speaking of awards, Bob Clark’s pristine 1967 BJ8, resplendent in Healey Blue, received the award for best in class. Congratulations to one and all! The show’s main purpose is to fundraise and promote the Rotary’s service beyond self, but it also offers an opportunity to have relaxed conversations with like-minded people fueled by a shared passion for cars and car culture. Purpose Achieved!
