This was my first time attending the Main Street, El Segundo Car Show, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and in its 28th iteration. A group of our South Bay members have attended for years, and I was going to attempt to meet up with them in a sea of 350 cars. I hit the 5 Fwy south at 6:15 transitioned to the 110 Fwy through downtown LA and after legs on the 105 and 405 I pulled into line on El Segundo Blvd at 10 to seven. I was eight blocks from the show entrance and entry didn’t start until 8am.
Contacted Greg Aden who, along with seven other members, had been afforded early entry and he gave me their location and said they were making space for me to park. Once on Main Street I found the group at Main St and Franklin Ave, Steve Magoffin, Greg, and Corkey Holt on the west side of the street by the Rock and Brews restaurant and Dan O’Neill, Clay Kaytis, Monica Lago- Kaytis and Phil and Nancy Caliva on the east side by the El Segundo Brewing Co.
Were we here for a car show or to drink? Phil was showing his latest acquisition, a 1934 Dodge Brothers Humpback Panel Truck.
The rest of our group had their Healeys, which made for a nice grouping and garnered a lot of spectator interest.
Another member, Dave Beugen, had his Rolls Royce convertible parked in the intersection.
After parking and getting settled in, Steve, Greg and I headed to a little cafe set back from the street for breakfast. After eating we returned to our cars grabbed our chairs and proceeded to enjoy the show.
There were strolling a’capella singers, a live band on the Main Stage, and vendor and merchan’ts booths galore. With music from the restaurant, lots of shade, and a continuous stream of spectators, we had an enjoyable time. When it was time for the awards Phil Caliva was shocked to receive an Award of Excellence Certificate and an Award Winners mini-surfboard. The show ended at 3:00pm, the floodgates opened and 350+ cars all tried to leave at once. My 35 minute trip down turned into an hour and 20 minute return trip. All in all a great car day!
